Oh Dear...Sega Fans... [Sonic The Hedgehog]

Google Reader Shared Items - 15 hours 47 min ago

Yeah, you love Sonic, OK? We all do. But there's a point where you can love Sonic too much. Enjoying Sonic making out with human chicks, for example, is enjoying Sonic too much. As is walking into a tattoo parlour, sitting down, saying "cover the arm with Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and a Sega logo, will you?" and thinking it's a good idea.

FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, WHAT IS WRONG WITH PEOPLE? [UK:R]

Poor Link, he just can't catch a break. Even when he's just taking a nice stroll in the suburbs, he gets accosted. And this isn't just any old bully, either. This is the kind of a bully with no regard for proper hat use (see: the worst kind).

Look at that floppy thing on his head. It's like some kind of disgusting hybrid made for all seasons, yet looks incredibly stupid. A man who has no idea how silly he looks in a ridiculous hat is the most dangerous man on Earth.

The OS X desktop as music video

A digital filmmaker named Dennis Liu has made an amazing video for The Bird And The Bee's lovely song "Again & Again". The set? His Mac desktop. You sort of have to see it for yourself to understand; luckily, Dennis has dropped it on YouTube so that the world can see it in low-res glory:

Innovative, and definitely cool. It doesn't seem to be an "official" video for the song...but if it isn't, it oughtta be. (Hey, Bird! Bee! Y'all paying attention?)

Thanks, Ted Roddy!

English of the Demo

Google Reader Shared Items - Fri, 05/09/2008 - 9:45am

Start your Friday with a bit of an English refresher -- and some zombie-dispatching! Sega has created a short Flash demo for English of the Dead, recreating the multiple-choice training mode. In this mode, a zombie will run out and threaten you with two rubber mallets. Then, a Japanese sentence (our Flash player doesn't have Japanese language support, hence the gibberish) and a partial English translation will appear. It's up to you to choose the correct English word on the bottom screen, and compel the zombie to jump into a trap door!

You actually have to wait a long time before the zombie will attack you. Presumably this is more challenging if you don't know English.

More Vii for you: another Wii knockoff hits the scene

Google Reader Shared Items - Fri, 05/09/2008 - 7:15am

We had a giggle over the Vii last year, but like any massively popular icon of pop culture, the ripoffs are far from over. We spied this recent imitator over at Engadget, with comes with a slew of vaguely identifiable acessories including paddles, something that might be a bat and a tiny blue spaceship. I'm kidding, I have no idea what that little blue thing is. A heart rate monitor?

The rig costs roughly $205 and comes with a gift box in case you want to make someone hate you for life. How thoughtful! It was made by China Shenzhen Firstsing Company Limited, who hilariously enough made a cooling fan for the actual Wii, but apparently didn't make the profit they hoped for, so they decided to rip off the whole system. Nice going. I wish I knew someone in China who could tell me if this crud actually sells.

[Thanks Justin]

Reader, Can I Have A Lens With That Please?

Google Reader Shared Items - Thu, 05/08/2008 - 1:46pm

T.V. Raman and Charles Chen, who have helped out with accessibility in Reader in the past, have not rested on their laurels and have another feature to announce:

I've long maintained that CSS is one of the most well-kept (and consequently under-exploited) accessibility secrets of the Web. Thinking back to the time that CSS1 became a W3C Recommendation, those of us who cared deeply about accessibility took great care to ensure that the end-user had a lot of control with respect to how content was displayed -- yet, end-user tools that allow users to leverage this capability have been rare.

As we were experimenting with Google Reader using AxsJAX, one of the enhancements we prototyped was the addition of a simple CSS-based lens that allows the user to selectively magnify the current article. Notice that this is subtly different from using a generic screen magnifier -- in that later case, you end up magnifying the entire screen. Google Reader can be smarter; since it knows which article you are currently reading, it can selectively magnify just that article upon request. This results in much better use of screen real-estate -- something that is an even scarcer resource when you're a low-vision user.

After prototyping this via the AxsJAX framework, we decided that this feature made sense for exposing to all our users -- we have now integrated this functionality into the main Reader interface. So with this lens in hand (your pocket) you can continue to hit j and k to move through articles, and when you find the print too small to read you can press = or - to enlarge or shrink the font of the article you're reading. The C in CSS stands for Cascading -- and in this case, you the end-user get to have the final say in how you consume your content by cascading your request for a larger font on top of the presentation chosen by the content publisher.

Found Footage: Mac for Attorney General

Greg Macpherson is running for Attorney General in Oregon. Normally this isn't the stuff of TUAW posts, but normally political campaigns don't run an ad that is very reminiscent of a certain computer company's advertising.

It would seem that Mr. Macpherson's nickname is 'Mac,' and I think you can see where I'm going with this. Check out the ad here. Sure, it isn't a laugh a minute, but it is fairly clever.

Oh, and this post should in no way be considered an endorsement for any political candidate of any sort.

Raging Thunder races onto the iPhone (unofficially for now)

Google Reader Shared Items - Thu, 05/08/2008 - 7:00am

The iPhone continues to impress in terms of gaming possibility. Raging Thunder isn't actually done yet on the iPhone (obviously -- judging by this video there are more glitches on this thing than a Matrix full of black cats), but once it gets rolling, the award-winning game, put together by Polarbit, looks like a pretty sweet racing experience. The accelerometer actually serves as a nice wheel (with a little help from the Wii wheel), and the graphics aren't too shabby, either.

We've already seen a few different games like this floating around at TUAW (including one from a big developer that we can't tell you about), but with a little bug fixing and optimization, the right tuning, and a horizontal mode, the iPhone could easily have a great accelerometer-controlled racing game available at launch. And that's just launch -- we can't wait to see what happens when a game like the Wii's latest Boom Blox (which lets you push and pull Jenga-type block structures around -- multitouch, anyone?) makes its way over to our little Apple handheld.

Racing Thunder is available right now on Installer.app, but this kind of stuff is what we're really looking for in the SDK when it comes out in June.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Portal gets new Flash-inspired maps

Google Reader Shared Items - Thu, 05/08/2008 - 3:25am

So we're sure you all remember our love for Portal: The Flash Version in which We Create Stuff took all the fun of Portal and bludgeoned it with a digital hammer until it could fit into two dimensions. Now, like in some sort of Tom and Jerry cartoon, We Create Stuff's Hen Mazolski has inserted a bike pump into the flattened game's mouth and re-inflated it to 3D, with all of the Flash versions' levels intact.

This is no mere rehash of the Flash game, though that, in and of itself, would have been impressive. At around 3 1/2 hours, this is a complete experience, with GLaDOS' urgings and taunting remixed to provide an alternate take on the Enrichment Center experience. If you're a fan of Portal, you really shouldn't miss it.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Strange Nintendo Channel restriction

Google Reader Shared Items - Wed, 05/07/2008 - 9:14pm

One of my favorite features on the Nintendo Channel is, of course, the ability to download download DS demos straight from my Wii onto my DS. A number of sources have reported a bizarre restriction in this service, however.

Nintendo has essentially blocked access to DS demos to people who do not allow Nintendo to access their Wii data. The reason as to why Nintendo would do this remains unknown, especially regarding that no information appears to be used by Nintendo when downloading the demos.

Hilarious Muppet Bloopers

I was searching YouTube and I found some extremely hilarious Muppet Bloopers.

Best Game of the Year and Best April Fools Joke

One of the biggest surprises this April Fool's day was GameTap's release of Captain McGrandpa - Memory of the Forgotten. You download the game and when you go to play it, a launcher appears. You click on Play Game and your redirected to a thread on the GameTap forums where TheRedEye is the Game Master and the community responds with direct commands like a Text Adventure.

At first glance this seems strange, but once I started playing it---I was hooked! The game started an old man named Captain Grandpa who needs to figure out what he's supposed to be doing that day. The game ended at 6pm when we found out he was scheduled to be on a game show.

You had to follow it to fully appreciate it, but it wins my vote for Best April Fools Joke, even more than the World of Warcraft April Fools jokes. I hope to see more like this from GameTap.

Next Week We Meet Brandon!

The Sims 3

It seems like not too long ago The Sims 2 came out. I loved the series back in The Sims 1, but The Sims 2 never really felt the same.

My Dad is now home from the hospital!

My Dad is now out of the hospital and everything's OK with him. Thank you Lord, and thanks to all of you who prayed for him and for our family.

My Dad Needs Prayer

On Saturday we took my Dad to the hospital and he's still there. We still don't know for sure what's going on, but at least he's in the care of the hospital.

He's in need of prayer, I'm trying to cope with this and I'm missing him. It's hard to focus on a lot of things when my Dad is not doing well.

Please Lord, be with my Dad!
