Google has launched a new tool called Lively, which is Windows only, and it looks decent. The controls aren’t quite as fluid as Active Worlds and it has a limited set of choices right now, but it’s not bad! I haven’t used it enough to gather an opinion on it, but I’ll give it time. I recommend you check it out and see what you think.
